February 3, 2023 – Walterboro, South Carolina – Pomega Energy Storage Technologies, a subsidiary of Controlmatik Technologies, hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the first US lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in South Carolina.<\/p>\n

As construction nears completion on its lithium-ion battery factory in Ankara, Controlmatik Technologies announced in December its plan to build a 500,000-square-foot facility in Colleton County expected to begin production in mid-2024, creating approximately 575 new jobs. It has an initial production capacity of 3 gigawatt-hours (GWh). The company later plans to increase the capacity to 6 GWh and has secured land to expand its operations. The company will invest $300 million in preliminary capital expenditures on the new facility.<\/p>\n

Pomega will produce lithium iron phosphate cells designed exclusively for North American grid-scale energy storage applications. In addition to manufacturing battery cells at its South Carolina factory, Pomega will also manufacture and assemble turnkey battery energy storage systems (BESS), including modules, cabinets and end-container energy storage solutions.<\/p>\n

“Due to the exponential increase in demand for lithium-ion battery cells and integrated systems in the face of a lack of reliable domestic supply in the market and a strong dependence on external supplies, especially from China, it was inevitable to plan to expand our investments and operations in Turkey. Controlmatic Technologies and Pomega Energy Storage Technologies USA CEO Bahad\u0131r Yetki said, "We are about to bring reliable American-made lithium-ion battery cell production capacity to the market as a solution to major supply chain problems in the United States."<\/p>\n

Once production begins at the company's plant in South Carolina, Pomega will be one of the first and only U.S. lithium-ion battery manufacturers dedicated solely to the domestic utility-scale energy storage market, as opposed to the electric vehicle market, where the vast majority of EVs are located. The focus is currently on new investments. This will place Pomega at the forefront of the energy storage revolution, allowing it to not only vertically integrate its own supply chain for BESS, but also supply these important lithium-ion batteries to other domestic BESS integrators. For this purpose, the company started to sign offtake agreements for its future capacity.<\/p>\n
